Summer Reads, Revisited
May 29, 2008 by Boyd
I said earlier that “it is important to both read deeply (and slowly) and broadly. Be discerning about which category a book should fall into for you.” So I was delighted to hear that D.A. Carson also thinks that there is “reading” and then there is “READING” and not every book deserves the same amount of time and attention. Using the method he talks about linked above, he reads 500 books a year.
Carson will read about 120+ books this summer. Surely you can read a handful of books this summer. Now would be a good time to make your summer read list.
The Best for Last
May 27, 2008 by Boyd
We have two more weeks of SixSixteen Sunday Morning until we break for the summer. It is still not too late to come. We’ve been studying 1 Peter and plan to look at 1 Peter 5:6-11 on June 1st and then do a summary of 1 Peter on June 8th.
1 Peter 5:6-11 is an important passage in the book and includes a fitting encouragement in verses 10-11 that summarizes the book nicely. Peter saved the best for last:
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. (ESV)
We hope to see you this Sunday.
Memorial Day
May 21, 2008 by Boyd
There will be no SixSixteen this Sunday as we break for Memorial Day. Our next Bible study is scheduled for June 1.
Summer Reads
May 18, 2008 by Boyd
As we discussed at SixSixteen today, here’s a list of some of the books I hope to read or survey this summer:
- Crazy Love by Francis Chan
- Israel and the Church by Diprose
- Future Israel by Horner
- Ministries of Mercy by Timothy Keller
- How Africa Shaped the Christian Mind by Thomas Oden
- Memoris of an Ordinary Pastor by D.A. Carson
- Because the Time is Near by John MacArthur
- The Second Coming by John MacArthur
- Three Views on the Rapture edited by Gundry
- Three Views on the Millennium and Beyond edited by Gundry
Be free to read books and not read every page. Not all books are worth reading every page. Be ok with having read a portion of a book that needs to land on you for the moment and then putting it back on your shelf. It is important to both read deeply (and slowly) and broadly. Be discerning about which category a book should fall into for you.
Chosen, Holy, Beloved

What Did You Wear Today?
May 14, 2008 by Boyd
What did you wear today?
Did you wear the shirt you picked out in order to create an image, to cast a perception, to tell a story about who you are? How about your shoes? Why did you choose heals rather than flats? Did you decide to do a tie or no tie? Why?
Perhaps you didn’t think a whole lot about what you put on today. Perhaps it was the only thing clean. Regardless, what you wear tells people a story about who you are or what you want to be, even if you didn’t think about it.
Spiritually speaking, you must know the answer to the question, “What are you wearing?” if you are going to battle for faith and fight sin in your life. This Friday night, we’ll take a look at Colossians 3 and see how this question helps us live holy lives.
Meet us at 6:30 at the downtown campus in Room 52. We hope to see you there. And especially if you are new to Bethlehem, make sure you find my wife (Ingrid) and I and say hello.
You Are What You Wear
May 9, 2008 by Boyd
May’s SixSixteen Friday Night is on May 16th at 6:30 p.m at the downtown campus in Room 52 (youth basement area).
We will be focusing our attention on Colossians 3 in a message entitled “You Are What You Wear.” We will also have a worship band leading us in song.
Pray like crazy that God would help us to worship Him, and then come with the expectation that you would meet God.
We hope to see you there.
