SixSixteen Kicks-Off Again
September 7, 2007 by Boyd
We start up again this Sunday (September 9th) at 9:00 a.m. I’m looking forward to studying 1 Peter verse-by-verse this year. The book is a perfect combination of doctrine and practicality. Up first, Peter seems to think that the doctrine of election will somehow provide comfort to suffering Christiains.
Is that how you understand election?
Even in a church like Bethlehem that holds the doctrine of election precious, probably few think election has anything to do with their daily living. Most lovers of election think of it merely in terms of soteriology (i.e. a doctrine of salvation). But biblically there is more. Could it be that election also has much to do with, for example, missiology? Is election merely a Sunday morning doctrine, or is it a Monday morning doctrine too?
Peter (and God) thinks differently than most of us do about election.
So for the next few weeks the underlying question we’ll be trying to answer as we examine the first several verses in chapter 1 is this: how does election and new birth operate in a Christian’s life to give him hope in suffering?
